Skins' Statistical Beating Continues

Washingon's ghastly fumble fortunes returned again today with an 0-for-4 recovery performance that was just bad enough to cost them yet another game. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about see this post.) Over the past two games against the Eagles and Buccaneers the Redskins actually covered a league average 50 percent of fumbles, but today's performance dropped the team to 9-of-39 on the season, just a bit above their nadir a few weeks ago. The Skins effectively lost control of their playoff destiny by losing to the Raiders. They're now the fourth ranked team contending for two NFC wildcard spots, one game behind 6-4 Atlanta and two games behind the 7-3 Giants and Bucs. Washington could perhaps afford one more loss and squeak into the playoffs, as long as it isn't during the three-game All-NFC East stretch to end the season. We'll see...

A friend of mine had free tickets to this game so I actually got to see it live. What a disappointment - up 13-3 at the half and then losing. And how can we score 35 the previous week and then get no offensive TDs this week? Argh.

Too bad. Still nice to go to a game though. I've only been to 3 Skins games.

One was the 7-7 tie with New York in 1997 in which Patrick Ramsey intentionally bashed his head into the endzone wall after scrambling for the sole TD and Michael Westbrook took the team out of field goal range in OT by removing his helmet to protest an official's call. (Not to mention it was a 4 hour game at 8 PM in late December in Washington.)

Another was the miraculous Dallas come-from-behind win in 1997 (in Dallas) in which the Skins blew an 11 point lead in the final two minutes and started their streak of 14 or 15 consecutive losses to Dallas!

Keep me away!

Good eye for detail Kev...I was going to make the same comment. Hey, I think the skins play the AFC South next year so there's a 50-50 chance that the skins will play in Houston. It may be my only chance to see them win a game in TX since TX Stadium has been so unfriendly to them. I may try to get tickets next year. Any takers on making it a Texas weekend with me?

Ashley, how about yesterday's game? Five turnovers in the first quarter... and 3 picks in the first half by Brunell. Whew!

Doh! Of course, Kevin. These ex-Redskins coaches and quarterbacks are hard to keep track of sometimes. I thought recently of writing a post on which ones have better records than the Skins over the past few seasons: Schottenheimer, Lewis-yes; Turner, no; etc.

Tom, yes it was ugly. One of the few I've been able to watch this year and a bit depressing. I've been crunching numbers for a big post on NFL strength of schedule and what it means in terms of games won or lost so I'll write that up in general and as it relates to the Skins soon. Some very interesting things...at least to me!
